Liquid damage is one of the most stressful things that can happen to a MacBook owner. Whether it is a spilled coffee, a knocked-over glass of water or a splash in the kitchen — the first 30 minutes are critical. What you do immediately determines whether your MacBook can be saved.
Step 1 — Power Off Immediately (Do Not Wait)
The moment liquid contacts your MacBook, shut it down immediately. Do not save your files first. Do not close applications. Hold the power button and force shutdown. Every second the MacBook remains powered on while wet increases the risk of electrical short circuits that cause permanent component damage.
If it shuts itself off, do not attempt to restart it to check if it still works. This is the most common mistake MacBook owners make and it is the one that causes irreversible damage.
Step 2 — Disconnect Everything
Unplug the charger immediately. Disconnect any USB devices, external displays or accessories. If your MacBook has a removable battery (older models), remove it. The goal is to eliminate any electrical current running through the device.
Step 3 — Do Not Use Heat to Dry It
Do not use a hairdryer, oven, microwave or place the MacBook in direct sunlight to dry it out. Heat causes additional damage to the logic board components and screen. It also drives moisture deeper into the device rather than removing it.
Turn the MacBook upside down in a tent position (like an open book) to allow gravity to drain liquid away from the logic board. Place it on a dry towel.
Step 4 — Do Not Put It in Rice
The rice trick is a myth. Rice does not effectively absorb moisture from inside electronics. Rice particles can also enter the MacBook and cause additional problems. Leave the MacBook in a dry room-temperature environment instead.
Step 5 — Bring It to a Repair Technician Immediately
This is the most important step. Do not wait days to see if it dries out. Liquid damage causes corrosion on the logic board that begins within hours of exposure. The longer you wait the more components are affected and the lower the recovery rate.
A professional repair technician will open the MacBook, clean the logic board with isopropyl alcohol, remove corrosion and assess which components have been damaged. This process stops the damage from spreading.
What Happens if You Wait Too Long?
If liquid damage is left untreated for several days, corrosion spreads across the logic board affecting the CPU, GPU, RAM and other chips. What could have been a AED 300-500 cleaning repair becomes a AED 800-1500 component-level repair or in severe cases, a full logic board replacement.
What Is the Success Rate for MacBook Water Damage Repair?
If you bring the MacBook in within a few hours of the incident, the success rate is very high — above 90% for standard liquid exposure. If the MacBook was running when it was submerged or soaked, or if you have left it several days before seeking repair, the success rate decreases.
